Subscription revenue is the closest thing to predictable income a Shopify store can build. It lowers customer acquisition cost per repeat order, raises LTV, and reduces the revenue volatility that kills brands between ad cycles. It is also the area where a single wrong app decision costs you more than almost any other Shopify tool — because subscription apps charge transaction fees on every order, and at scale those fees dwarf the monthly subscription line item on your bill.

Most subscription app comparisons stop at the monthly price. This one goes further: transaction fee math at real subscription volumes, checkout extensibility compliance, cancellation save flow depth, and how difficult each app is to migrate away from if you pick wrong. This is the 2026 comparison from a team that has moved client stores between every one of these platforms.

If you are building out your full conversion stack at the same time, this post pairs with our Shopify checkout optimization guide and our guide to increasing your Shopify conversion rate — the checkout experience for a first-time subscriber is one of the highest-leverage conversion moments on your store and worth testing in parallel with your app selection.

Disclaimer: All pricing, plan names, feature lists, and transaction fee rates in this article were verified directly from each vendor’s website and Shopify App Store listing on September 2, 2026. Subscription app pricing changes frequently — vendors restructure tiers, adjust transaction fees, and rename plans without notice. Always verify current pricing on each vendor’s pricing page and final approval screen before committing. We are not affiliated with any of the apps reviewed below and receive no commission for any recommendation.

Why Subscription Revenue Changes the Math on Your Shopify Store

A one-time buyer who converts once is worth their initial order value. A subscriber is worth a multiple of that — typically 3 to 4 times the LTV of an equivalent one-time buyer over a 12-month window, according to Recharge’s State of Subscription Commerce report. That LTV premium is why subscription-enabled Shopify stores can profitably acquire customers at CPAs that would destroy a transactional-only brand running the same SKUs on the same ad platforms.

The mechanics are straightforward: you convert a customer once through your normal acquisition funnel, then you capture recurring revenue from every subsequent order at near-zero marginal acquisition cost. Subscription repeat orders have no ad spend attached, no influencer cut, no affiliate commission. They are pure incremental margin — and they are the difference between a brand that survives a Meta auction spike and one that cannot.

But subscription revenue requires infrastructure that standard Shopify checkout does not provide out of the box. You need a billing engine, a customer portal where subscribers can pause, skip, and swap, dunning management to recover failed payments, and cancellation flows to save churning subscribers before they leave. Every app on this list solves that problem differently — and every order placed without a subscription is revenue you will not see again next month.

The Five Apps Compared Head to Head

Shopify subscription app feature matrix for Recharge, Appstle, Bold, Loop, and Skio
Use a feature matrix to build a shortlist, then verify current plan eligibility and implementation details with each vendor.

These five apps cover the overwhelming majority of Shopify subscription volume in 2026. If you are evaluating subscription tools for a Shopify store, your decision is almost certainly between these options. Here is what each one is actually built for.

Recharge — The Category Default

Recharge is one of Shopify’s most established subscription platforms. Its current Shopify App Store listing shows a $25/month plan for stores with 25 to 50 subscribers, with no transaction fees for the first 50 subscribers and a 60-day trial. The practical paid tiers are Starter at $99/month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction and Plus at $499/month plus 1.34% + 19¢, with scalable transaction rates. Confirm the rate shown in your proposal or approval screen before signing because negotiated terms can differ from the public listing.

Strengths: a broad integration ecosystem, subscription reporting, payment-recovery tools, and an established partner network. Tradeoffs: the percentage-plus-per-order fee can become material as recurring revenue grows, the admin and feature set require deliberate setup, and any future migration needs a carefully coordinated contract and billing cutover. If Recharge and Skio are your final two, use our detailed Skio vs Recharge comparison to evaluate the portal, retention tooling, pricing, and migration path.

Appstle — The Feature-Per-Dollar Champion

Appstle’s current Shopify App Store listing publishes a Free plan up to $500 in monthly subscription revenue, Starter at $10/month up to $5,000, Business at $30/month up to $15,000, and Business Premium at $100/month up to $100,000. Larger stores can contact Appstle for enterprise pricing. Critically, Appstle lists 0% transaction fees across these plans.

Strengths: no percentage transaction fee, low self-serve entry prices, and subscriptions, bundles, loyalty, and retention features across the plan ladder. Tradeoffs: pricing is capped by monthly subscription revenue, so a growing store may move tiers sooner than the headline price suggests, and teams should verify that required integrations and reporting are included in the eligible tier. See our Appstle vs Recharge comparison for a direct cost and capability decision.

Bold Subscriptions — The Tiered-Fee Merchandising Option

Bold’s current Shopify App Store listing, checked September 3, 2026, publishes Launch at $24.99/month plus 2% of subscription orders, Grow at $49.99/month plus 1%, and Scale at $74.99/month plus 0.9%. The listing highlights Shopify Checkout integration, cancellation management, customer-portal controls, prepaid and build-a-box offers, and APIs for custom implementations. Confirm which order value Bold uses for the percentage fee in your approval screen or contract before forecasting total cost.

Strengths: a clear public plan ladder, native Shopify Checkout support, flexible subscription merchandising, portal controls, and API options. Tradeoffs: its percentage fee makes total cost rise with subscription volume, and teams should verify the exact integration, analytics, retention, and migration capabilities required by their selected tier. See our Recharge vs Bold comparison for a direct pricing and operating-model decision.

Loop Subscriptions — The Retention Specialist

Loop emphasizes subscriber retention alongside recurring billing. Its differentiating features include loyalty mechanics, product swaps, pause options, and cancellation flows that can present offers based on the reason a subscriber selects. Pricing is $99/month for Growth (plus 0.75% per transaction) and $299/month for Scale (plus 0.5%). Enterprise plans are custom-quoted; confirm current terms before purchase.

Strengths: configurable cancellation flows, loyalty and pause mechanics, and a Klaviyo integration. Tradeoffs: transaction fees remain, the integration ecosystem differs from Recharge’s, and the retention features require thoughtful setup and measurement to prove value.

Skio — The Shopify Plus Pick

Skio’s public Scale plan is $599/month on monthly billing or $5,988/year, an effective $499/month, plus 1% + 20¢ per order involving a subscription. Skio’s billing guide says the percentage applies to the final order total, including subscription and one-time items, shipping, and tax, less discounts. The published feature set includes a no-code customer portal, passwordless login, lifecycle Journeys, multi-step cancellation flows, Build-a-Box, analytics and segmentation, payment recovery, and migration tooling.

Recharge acquired Skio in April 2026. Both companies state that the two products continue operating and shipping while their teams combine roadmaps, so merchants should still compare the products as distinct platforms while asking how future integrations may affect the choice. Skio’s strengths are its portal and retention workflow, but its public base fee and usage fee require enough operational value to justify the cost. Our full Skio vs Recharge guide works through that condition-based decision, while the Skio vs Smartrr comparison covers the two portal-led alternatives directly.

Transaction Fees — The Number That Matters More Than the Monthly Rate

The monthly plan fee is only one part of the cost when evaluating a subscription app at scale. Usage fees can define your actual all-in cost. Here is what Recharge Starter’s published 1.49% + 19¢ costs at real subscription volumes, assuming a $60 average order value:

  • $5,000/month in subscription revenue (~83 orders at $60 AOV): about $90/month in usage fees. Total with the $99 plan: about $189/month.
  • $20,000/month in subscription revenue (~333 orders at $60 AOV): about $361/month in usage fees. Total with the $99 plan: about $460/month.
  • $50,000/month in subscription revenue (~833 orders at $60 AOV): about $903/month in usage fees. Total with the $99 plan: about $1,002/month.

At $50,000/month in subscription revenue, Recharge Starter costs roughly $12,028/year under those assumptions, compared with $1,200/year for Appstle Business Premium, the Appstle tier that covers up to $100,000 in monthly subscription revenue. That roughly $10,828 gap must be justified by feature fit, integrations, recovered revenue, or operating efficiency; the two plans should not be treated as feature-identical.

The exception: if a more expensive app saves enough through recovered failed payments, reduced churn, or improved subscriber LTV to cover the fee gap, the math can flip. On Recharge’s current public rates, Plus is $400/month more than Starter but its percentage rate is only 0.15 points lower. With the same 19¢ per-order fee, Plus becomes cheaper on published fee math alone at roughly $267,000 in monthly subscription revenue; feature value or a negotiated rate can move that decision earlier.

Real Pricing at the Practical Entry Tier (Verified September 2026)

Subscription app pricing pages use entry-tier headlines that do not reflect what most growing stores actually need. The practical entry tier for a store with 200+ active subscriptions needing Klaviyo integration, cancellation flows, and a branded customer portal looks like this:

AppPlanMonthly Flat FeeTransaction FeeAll-In at $20K MRR
RechargeStarter$991.49% + 19¢/order~$460
AppstleBusiness Premium$1000%$100
BoldGrow$49.991%~$250
LoopGrowth$990.75%/order~$249
SkioScale (monthly billing)$5991% + 20¢/order~$866

At $20K/month in subscription revenue, Appstle Business Premium is $100, Bold Grow is about $250, and Recharge Starter is about $460 under the $60-AOV assumption. The case for Recharge at this revenue band rests on capability and ecosystem fit, not price alone. Compare the actual features and integrations your team will use before treating the invoice gap as savings.

Checkout Extensibility — Why This Is Now Non-Negotiable

Shopify announced the sunset of its legacy checkout customization API in August 2024. Every subscription app still using the old checkout injection method had to migrate to Checkout Extensibility — Shopify’s native checkout extension framework — or risk breaking their integration on every store they were installed on. All five apps on this list support Shopify’s current subscription and checkout framework as of September 2026. This is now table stakes — if you are evaluating a subscription app not on this list, verify its current compatibility before installing.

What compliance means in practice: the subscribe-and-save checkout flow runs inside Shopify’s native checkout without redirects, without JavaScript injections, and without the checkout conflicts that plagued legacy subscription apps. The customer experience is cleaner, and you do not lose the Shopify checkout conversion optimizations — accelerated checkouts, Shop Pay, and native discount stacking — that the old injection methods often broke.

The checkout is also where you can win or lose subscription sign-ups from first-time buyers. A clear subscribe-and-save offer must preserve the product, price, frequency, discount, and renewal terms from product page through payment. See our Shopify checkout optimization guide for how to structure that test.

Cancellation Flow Capabilities — Where Most Subscription Revenue Is Won or Lost

Subscriber acquisition is expensive. A cancellation flow that saves 20 percent of cancellation attempts generates more LTV over 12 months than almost any other retention initiative you could run. The five apps handle cancellation saves very differently:

  • Loop: Dynamic offers — discount, pause, or product swap — can be triggered by the cancellation reason selected in the exit survey. Evaluate save rate and retained margin with your own offer design.
  • Recharge: Configurable cancellation experiences and retention tools, with exact capabilities depending on plan and configuration.
  • Skio: Multi-step cancellation flows that can use the selected cancellation reason to present options such as a pause, product change, or offer.
  • Appstle: Cancellation management and retention features are available, but verify which tools are included at the revenue-eligible plan rather than assuming the $30 Business tier applies above its $15,000 cap.
  • Bold: Basic. Cancellation reason capture exists but offer logic is limited. If subscriber churn is your primary problem, Bold is not the right pick.

The calculus: if churn is a larger problem than CAC for your store, start with Loop. The save flows alone typically justify the transaction fee premium over Appstle within 60 days on any store processing more than 200 subscription renewals per month. Run the math on your current cancellation rate before making the call.

Migration Reality — How Hard Is It to Switch Apps Later?

Subscription data is even stickier than reviews data. Contracts, billing schedules, app settings, historical analytics, and payment credentials can be distributed across Shopify, the subscription app, and the payment gateway. A safe migration requires mapping the contracts, confirming payment-method eligibility, validating upcoming charges, and coordinating a cutover so subscribers are not billed twice.

  • Recharge: Recharge provides exports and migration documentation, but the receiving app or migration partner still has to map active contracts and coordinate the billing cutover. Payment-method handling depends on the store’s Shopify and gateway setup, while historical analytics and app-specific configuration may not transfer.
  • Appstle: Moderate. Has dedicated migration tools from Recharge and Bold. Payment token transfer works via Shopify Payments vaulting if both apps support it. Easier to leave than Recharge.
  • Bold: Moderate. Migration tooling for moving into Bold is solid. Moving out requires coordination with support, but Bold is generally cooperative and well-documented.
  • Loop: Moderate. Dedicated migration tools exist. Payment token transfer supported via Shopify Payments. Similar difficulty to Appstle.
  • Skio: Skio’s published process copies subscriptions into new Shopify contracts, provides a preview for merchant approval, and schedules the go-live and prior-platform billing shutdown. Payment-method handling still depends on the processor and source setup.

The strategic implication: evaluate export access, payment-method compatibility, contract mapping, historical-data retention, and cutover ownership before you install any subscription app. Appstle or Bold offers a lower-cost entry point, while Recharge or Skio may justify a higher cost when their specific tooling fits the operation. Migration complexity depends more on the store’s contract and payment setup than on a universal easiest-or-hardest ranking.

Which App Should You Pick?

Here is the recommendation by store stage and primary problem. Use these as defaults — override when your specific situation demands it.

Up to $5K/month subscription revenue: Appstle Starter ($10/month)

Zero transaction fees, all the core features you need, and the savings versus Recharge Starter fund a meaningful chunk of your monthly ad spend. Do not overthink the tool at this stage. Collect subscriptions, measure your churn pattern at volume, and migrate when the feature gap starts to limit you. Appstle’s migration tools are good enough to make that transition clean.

$5K–$50K/month, churn is your main problem: Loop Subscriptions

If subscriber cancellation is the main problem, compare Loop’s incremental fee with the retained contribution margin from measured saves—not gross revenue alone. Configure offers by cancellation reason, define the margin floor for each incentive, and measure save rate and repeat retention before deciding that the fee pays back.

$5K–$50K/month, subscription merchandising matters: Bold Subscriptions

Bold Grow is $49.99/month plus 1% on the current public listing, with prepaid, build-a-box, portal, and cancellation tools. Shortlist it when those merchandising and implementation controls fit your model, then compare the percentage-fee base and required integrations against Recharge before choosing.

$50K–$500K/month, established DTC brand: Recharge Starter or Plus

At this revenue level, Recharge’s integrations, analytics, and partner network can become meaningful operational advantages. Evaluate Plus for the features and commercial terms you will actually use: at the public rates, its 1.34% fee does not offset the $400 higher monthly base price versus Starter’s 1.49% until roughly $267K/month in subscription revenue. A negotiated rate or Plus-only capability can change the outcome.

Shopify Plus or a complex subscription program: Skio or Recharge Plus

Choose Skio when its no-code portal, Journeys, Build-a-Box, and passwordless experience fit your operating model. Choose Recharge Plus when Recharge’s integrations and tooling are the stronger match. Because Recharge now owns Skio while both platforms continue to operate, ask each team about current roadmap implications and migration terms. Our Skio vs Recharge comparison lays out the conditions behind each choice.

Get Your Subscription Funnel Reviewed

Choosing the right app is the infrastructure decision. The conversion decision — how you present subscribe-and-save on the product page, how you structure the checkout offer, how you A/B test subscription frequency options — is a separate layer that most brands leave unoptimized. The app gives you the rails. What runs on those rails is what moves revenue.

Our team audits the full subscription funnel as part of our standard CRO engagement: product page presentation, checkout subscribe-and-save structure, customer portal UX, dunning sequence, and post-cancellation win-back flow. Most audits surface two or three changes that pay back inside 30 days.

If your shortlist has narrowed to two platforms, compare Skio vs Recharge, Appstle vs Recharge, Recharge vs Bold, or Skio vs Smartrr before choosing a contract. Those focused guides preserve this article’s broader shortlist while going deeper on the pricing, portal, retention, and migration tradeoffs that decide the final pick.
